SOUCHE

Yuhsin U Chang, plasticienne

The work

The sculpture is revealing herself at a turn of a grove, its whitish-grey arms seeming to snatch at the air. Christened Souche, the sculpture of the artist Yuhsin U Chang is composed of roots intermingled in resin. A strange union between softness and rigidity of the tree: a hybrid union, which links the living and the inanimate, the plant and the animal, in a five meter high installation, structured by invisible metal rods. This amazing, unearthly cohabitation blends into the surrounding vegetation however, questioning the balance, so fragile, of ecosystems. Her work, characterised by organic, raw and residual matter, transforms as time goes by. Often monumental, these works become a link between the inert and the living.

The artist

Originally from Taiwan, the artist Yuhsin U Chang, who is a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art in Bourges and the Sorbonne, explores the boundaries between the inert and the living. Organic matter, which she mixes with other components drawn from her everyday life, is her favourite means of expression in the creation of works. She exhibits all over the world, in Australia, Taiwan and in Europe, particularly in France for the festival Le Vent des forêts and at the Musée d’Art Contemporain and the Foire d’Art Moderne et Contemporain in Paris.
