“The first spark, the one opening the doors of imaginary and urging you to create, to invent a new territory. A space still blank where sounds, gestures and motions until now separated are meeting…” Somewhat poet, Mourad Merzouki, choreographer of the company Käfig, a now renowned institution in the world of hip-hop contemporary dance, took up with Recital the challenge to confront two worlds totally opposed, classical music and hip-hop dance. Since 1996, Mourad Merzouki has been renewing hip-hop language in order to bring it on stage with a great diversity of choreographies, scenographies and aestheticism. Far from social stereotypes but without denying its origins, the company has permitted hip-hop to reach a wide audience, with origins as diverse as those of the dancers themselves. The choreographer alleges the creation of an entire show, with many references and a real artistic dimension offered to hip-hop.
“The group Käfig proposes a recital where dancers and the musician Franck II Louise seize classical scores. Their show is extremely well-ordered and has great technique qualities. Hip-hop, acrobatics, contemporary dance… Käfig doesn’t fear barriers.” Marie Christine Vernay - Libération
