ORCHESTRE DE PICARDIE
Direction: Gilbert Varga

Conducted by Gilbert Varga, son of the great violinist Tibor Varga and famous for his exemplary technique, the Picardie Orchestra offers an exceptional programme dedicated to two great composers, Frank Martin and Beethoven. Gilbert Varga conducted orchestras among the most important in Europe, such as the Orchestra of Paris, the Bayerische Staatsorchester, the Berlin Radio Symphony, the Gürzenich, the Frankfurt Musuemgesellschaft… Talking about the exceptional qualities of the Swiss composer Frank Martin, Yehudi Menuhin said: “When I’m playing Frank Martin’s Polyptique, I feel the same responsibility, the same exaltation than when I’m playing Bach’s Chaconne”. Martin’s surprising 1949 Concerto for seven wind instruments combines intense lyricism and bright and shimmering instrumental colours. The soloist virtuosos of the Orchestra of Picardie are accompanied by the stringed instruments and by ringing kettledrums. In second part of this programme, the Symphony in E flat sets a new time and place. Because of its gigantic proportions and its crazy audacity, Beethoven’s contemporaries didn’t understand it. They didn’t see the extraordinary greatness or the deep and exhilarating humanity which still exists in this heroic Sinfonia Eroica!

“Gilbert Varga is a subtle musician with an infallible technique” Guillaume Lebrun - la Terrasse
