Drummer for great international pop stars, like Sting, Joni Mitchell or Peter Gabriel, Manu Katché is also known for having been a member of the Nouvelle Star jury (French version of Pop Idol). Fortunately, for him and for the others, he’s more than that. He’s also and above all one of the most singular and all-arounder drummers of the last 20 years. In the middle of the 80’s his minimalist and hovering style began to gain recognition. Recruited by the stars, he nevertheless thinks about adapting his rhythmic concepts for jazz groups. Even if he was born in Saint-Maur des Fossés near Paris, his familial roots link him to Africa, more precisely to the Ivory Coast. He began to learn piano when he was 5 and was later student at the National Conservatory of Paris. His style is a blend of African rhythmic concepts and classical rigour illuminated by a sense of immediate interaction characteristic of jazz. At a crossroads of continents, rhythms and cultures, Manu Katché’s music and jazz don’t resemble anything else.
“Manu Katché has been one of the great international big names of French jazz for 20 years. Remarkable and multitalented, he has accompanied the greatest pop stars. He also recorded several with Jan Garbarek and played with Michel Petrucciani. His creativity, his rigor and his melodic elegance make him an indispensable leader.” Ouest France
