The creation of The Rite of Spring, on Mai 13, 1913, in Paris (theatre of the Champs Elysees) provoked one of the most famous scandals in the history of music: spectators fighting, whistles and shouts covering the music… Several years later, this work still arouses emotions, commotions and creativity among choreographers! It’s ideally with that major work that can be revealed the demand of perfection, the rigor in writing and the inventiveness of lights and costumes of Marie Chouinard, for who “every shape is the displaying in space of a particular vital momentum”. She was the obvious choice for The Rite of Spring, a hymn to life. Besides, she has toured the whole world since its creation in 1993. The score by Stravinsky, to which so many artists have been confronted, is a real source of energy and inspiration for Marie Chouinard. She proposes, in echo and also in counterpoint of the music, vigorous and passionate choreography where she tries and expresses the uniqueness of each dancer. Other famous work in the history of dance, Debussy’s Prelude to afternoon will open the show.
“The Canadian Marie Chouinard sees the Rite in another way: to her, each one is the Chosen One. She executes solo after solo, sorts of mini coronations, and imagines costumes like second skin with outgrowths resembling animal claws. Her Rite is organic and her dance has a great physical power.” P hilippe Noisette / Les Echos
