LA DOULEUR
de Marguerite Duras

The Pain is an autobiographical diary; a diary of the dreadful fear, of despair, of the trying absence and of the threatening waiting for the return of the loved one, Robert Antelme. This is Marguerite Duras’s diary. Her husband was send to a concentration camp and, during the Liberation, she still doesn’t know if he’s alive or not. She wanders, she runs from an office to another, she doesn’t sleep or eat anymore. She waits; she keeps an eye on any possible sign of hope. War is still going on inside of her. Her group of Resistance fighters works to help those coming back. He will come back too, wounded and worn-out.
Patrice Chéreau directs his favourite actress Dominique Blanc who, even in her silences and her sighs, amplifies the simplicity and authenticity of Duras’s writing.

“The direction of the actress and her interpretation take us far beyond any tricks, in a world of absolute pain but also hope, and of essential and radical humanity, like a secular prayer.
The Pain is a heart-breaking cry for the love of life despite all opposition, despite the Nazi horror and the ordinary atrocity, and also despite us.”
