CASIMIR ET CAROLINE
De Ödön Von Horváth

We’ll never know how they met or how they loved each other. Now, Casimir and Caroline aren’t in love anymore… But shouldn’t two people be still in love, to say they don’t love anymore? This terrible and edifying story, set during the Munich beer festival two years after the 1929 economic crisis, shows the paradoxes of a splitting couple, pushed on the edge of the break up by the Machiavellianism of the world, by the crisis, the social conflict, ambition, the sexual desire of the aged, the thoughtless desire of the youth, exhilaration, dreaming, forgetfulness… This social and romantic fable, imagined by Odön von Horvath, is handled by Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota, new director of the Paris Théâtre de la Ville, and has a perfect cast – Sylvie Testud, Hugues Quester, Thomas Durand… It becomes timeless and universal. This is exactly what interested the director: “I’m fascinated by this play because it shows a world near its fall. Hence the importance of space: it determines a place of seduction and inexorable truth. It has to be at the same time wide and familiar, since about 20 people are busy in it and, among them, moments of privacy and intimacy are perceived. The banality of their situation, their problems, makes the characters deeply moving."

“A very beautiful show, powerful and well handled. Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota signs here one of his most accomplished work.” Hugues Le Tanneur - Les Inrockuptibles
