AVISHAI COHEN "AURORA"
jazz

The Israeli Avishai Cohen, the new star of the jazz double bass, has only one passion: playing a cosmopolitan jazz, a blend of Arabo-Andalusian and Hebraic cultural influences. He explores this universe with an exceptional quintet. Karen Malka’s precious voice, Amos Hoffman’s festive oud, Itamar Doari’s percussions and Shai Maestro’s incredibly intense keyboard magnify the talent of improvisation of the double bass player, whose success is greatly deserved. Born in 1970, near Jerusalem, he first played piano, then electric bass, as he was fascinated by Jaco Pastorius. When a was a young man he flew to New-York, where he worked with the Panamanian Danilo Perez and where he learned about the Latino sides of jazz. Chick Corea hired him just after he had created his first band and later he became double bass player for Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau… Avishai Cohen is the perfect example that various and colourful experiences and travels during youth give birth to a strong maturity! He now runs his own label, and builds, shows after shows, a private link between his music and his audience. Composer above all, his work on his roots, his story, his interbreeding, has become more and more deep and moving. His humanity and his Arabo-Andalusian Hebraic jazz music tell the story of desert Bedouins, of life, love, liberty… Irresistible and modern, ecumenical and demanding, inventive and melodic, Avishai Cohen, who’s also a bit of a magician, turned his double bass into a horn of plenty.

“Avishai Cohen belongs to those artists who blow away the frontiers of jazz. His music works for a better future.” Le Soir
